A s the first Turkish artist to depict his homeland within the European academic style of painting, Osman Hamdy Bey, more than any other Orientalist painter, personifies the bridge between Islamic and European culture. Born in Istanbul, Hamdy Bey received his artistic training in Paris during the 1860's under the tutelage of Gustave Boulanger. The son of the Grand Vizier Edhem Pasha, Osman.
